A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
