Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
