Much like Storm Claudia tore through the northwest the prior day, City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three-nil victory for their manager's side due to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This result marked successive WSL defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s capacity to juggle league and European football with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would truly test this fortitude. Unfortunately for the opposition, they seemed fatigued throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Skinner had sought to make changes with a a few alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no similar workload worries. Andrée Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to accumulate for the United boss and his team from the first whistle. This was a exhibition of the power from City whose energetic forward line controlled and dismantled the opposition with a sublime first half performance that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and left United disorganized. Before this fixture, United had conceded just a handful in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the face of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The early indicators came early when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything in the beginning, exploiting the space left by Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her crosses were creating danger and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple attacks forward, their direct style giving them choices in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, meanwhile, dominated the ball, taunting their rivals and trying to pull them out of their structure.

Goals Galore

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the season.

They increased their cushion with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the center from central defence, the play widened for City. The key Casparij collected the pass on the right side before providing a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a rapid shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to drive a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to change the course of the match. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any team who finished above them in the prior term, City's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding situation after the opening fixtures.
